Episode 161 »» Lightroom Battle: In This Corner

Gloves Are Off

Who knew something as simple as inventory management/post-processing software could cause such a ripple through the Shutter Time airwaves, though I suppose that’s just how things roll at times.

Google announced they will no longer be updating their Nik software collection and many photographers are none too happy with this move, even though it was long expected. One of our listeners chimed in suggesting an Adobe rant and gave his own rant about Lightroom (thanks, JF) and because it’s something on my mind, we took to the mics to sort it out. The gloves came off several times, but even with all the eye-rolling, grunts and awkward silence, the bickering is always in good fun! Pinky swear. Please join us as we discuss Adobe Lightroom and some alternatives available today. Also, we are sorry about your ears. Just a fair warning.

Note: for the record, I COMPLETELY agreed with Mac after we stopped recording about the competition segment at the end of the show, and we kept the conversation flowing for another hour or so. He was right – I can admit it, as painful as it might be. But just about that one part, ha.

Join the Convo

Are you currently using Adobe CC and if so, is it working for you? Does your post work involve alternatives to Adobe and if so, what are they? Please share the wealth! Is there anything else in the industry that is getting your goat and riling you up? We would love to hear about it because as we said at the end of the show, it’s up to us photographers/users/customers to make the change, bit by bit. You can keep the conversation going by chiming in on Bookface, Twitter or by leaving a comment on the blog! Of course you can subscribe for free via iTunes or Stitcher!

Thanks to our listeners for the suggestions and Adobe rants and thanks as always for tuning in, folks!

Mmmm, Fresh Gear!

The good folks at Sony are rumoured to be working on a full frame NEX … we chat about this and what it means to the mirrorless systems, some Samsung goodness (Galaxy NX, anyone?) and more! We also chat about a photography chat on Twitter, #photochat!

Preventing Ballhead Blues

It was time for me to purchase another ballhead and this time around, I found some restrictions when trying to choose a ballhead. We cover a few points to consider before handing over your hard earned cash.

Workflow 101

As photographers, we know how important the steps of workflow are, but here’s a good question for you — where does workflow start? In the camera? At the computer? When you first have vision of a particular shoot? We break down the step for simplifying your workflow. It’s always a work in progress with steps being added, removed or tweaked. We have both improved our workflow over the past couple of years and share some of the changes we have made and what we need to work on.

Bits ‘n Bites

Do you have any tips for creating an effective workflow? If so, please share! Are you interested in the full frame NEX or even the sort of sexy Samsung Galaxy NX? Anything else on your photography lovin’ mind?

Episode 53 ~ It’s A Post-Processing World

And we’re just living in it …

Episode 53 ~ It's A Post Processing World, shutter time with sid and mac, photography podcast, yegphoto

For Free, Y’all!

We take a look at some of the resources available via photographers who offer their knowledge and insights to making the photography business work for them ….for free. Soaking up the goodness from other photographers is a highly valuable tool to utilize as you build your business and / or nurture your talent. Massive props and many thanks to those incredible working photographers who do so willingly. It won’t be too much of a surprise whose site I flock to the most!

Editing Whiz

The digital world has made post-processing much easier to stretch your creative mind. The question is, have we gone too far with editing our images these days? Is there such a thing as too much processing in post? With all the software available (yeah, we’re talking to you, Nik by Google!), it’s hard to keep up, but it also gives us that much more to work with. Should we even be editing at all, or always get it 100% right in-camera? We discuss different aspects of post-processing and debate where we think it belongs in today’s photography world.

Bits n’ Bites

Calling all purists — if you feel editing should never be done in post and the workflow basically stops once you press the shutter button, please chime in and share why you are not a fan of editing! To those who have a post-processing workflow, what software do you prefer to use? Do you love editing images or are you more the fly-by the seat of your pants editor and the quicker it’s done, the better? Getting back to photography resources, do you have your own personal go-to site / photographer? Please share the wealth!

Keeping It Social

You know we’re chilling over at Google Plus these days (though we’re kind of quiet of late, oops!), our lil’ Google Plus community, Facebook, Twitter, and of course, you can subscribe for free via iTunes!  If you have the Stitcher App, you can also find us there!

Thanks as always for tuning in, folks!

Cheers, y’all!

Episode 4 ~ Photography Workflow

Canon’s Big, Bad Announcement

We all knew it was coming. We may not have gathered around the watercooler at work to discuss it, but the murmurs of what Canon’s next professional DSLR body could possibly be most likely escaped our lips. Have a listen to hear our thoughts on this new beast.

Your Photography Workflow

To say this is a critical component of your photography is an understatement. If you are struggling with your workflow yourself or are wanting to tweak it some, you might want to take some notes as Mac breaks down his workflow and offers some tips on developing one that works for you.

Bits ‘n Bites

As always, we thank you for taking the time to listen to our photography ramblings. We love the feedback that’s been coming in and we encourage y’all to leave a comment here or on Twitter about the show or anything photography related. Don’t be shy, now … Fresh blood = great discussion!

Hope you enjoy the show!

Thanks for listening!

Cheers, y’all!
