Absolutely Stunning

Chances are you know him and you love him. Photographer and YouTube creator, Thomas Heaton, joined us from the UK to discuss his craft, inspirations and what drives him to keep creating those incredible landscapes and deliciously entertaining videos whilst on location.

Uncle. Murphy.

Our longtime listeners are well aware of his presence and to keep things interesting, he showed up stronger than ever for episode 155 and decided to unceremoniously remove me from the show. Crazy audio woes aside, Mac and Tom kept marching on. Ah, at least I was there in spirit, right?

Mmmm … Fresh Gear

Ahhh, the wait is over. It’s no secret there have been some big announcements from a few camera manufactures this past week. The anticipation factor was quite high for Canon and Fuji particularly. Nice to see Canon back in the game as many of us were starting to wonder … We break down the bigger announcements as we kick off the show.

Udo!

We had a wee contest to celebrate 100 episodes with the winner receiving a couple of Shutter Time prints! Mac’s son drew the winning entry, so congrats to Udo! Thanks to all who entered the contest to win a print! Udo, we shall be in touch! Yay!

Finding Your Soul

I think every landscape photographer has one time or the other questioned their work and whether their image has any soul. Isn’t that the goal of every photographer and in particular, the landscape photographer? An article from photographer, Ugo Cei, about his thoughts on the lack of soul in landscape photography today sparked not only a fair bit of discussion, but also touched some nerves. We tackle this topic and try to understand what has happened with landscape photography, should we be concerned and what to do about it. There are a couple of hundred of comments scattered on several blogs and we suggest you check them out. A lot of folks have some great insight into this topic. One of my favourite comments by far is from photographer John Oro … Since the link to his comment will not work, I’ve included a screen capture of his response.

Are y’all excited about any of the fresh gear announced from Olympus, Canon or Fuji? What are your thoughts about the 50MP Canon body – is this really necessary? Would the full frame + 1.3 an 1.6 crop capabilities make this body appealing to you? We’d love to hear your thoughts on the gear announcements and of course, the landscape photography debate!  Thanks again for all the continued interaction – it’s so appreciated, y’all. You can find us on Bookface, Twitter, G+ (hahaha, I know I know), and of course you can find us on iTunes and the ol’ Stitcher App. Oh, and big thanks to Gavin for the great messages!

Thanks for tuning in!

Cheers, y’all!

Shutter Time High

After following his career on the show for the last couple of years, we were thrilled when Jake Peterson agreed to come on the show. He’s a big time wildlife, landscape and aviation photographer with a unique background, which led him to where he is today. Jake brings a fresh, yet sharp perspective to photography today and has a lot of interesting experiences and stories to tell. Luckily for us, he shares some of the wealth with us on the show.

Wildlife … landscapes … aviation … business … and passion … we cover it all!

This is Jake’s first podcast, so we were a wee gentle on him … sort of! Sit back, friends, relax and enjoy this great episode with Jake! You will learn a ton from this incredibly talented photographer and I bet you just might end up with a new appreciation for our wild heritage and see aviation history in a new light after the show.

Bits ‘n Bites

Episode 76 »» Landscape Photography’s Fate

Landscape Photography’s Fate … Sort Of.

We feel we’ve been drowning in gear chat of late on the show, so we’ve switched gears a bit. Mmmm … gear.  An article written by Alex Mody had us scratching our heads, trying to understand the article and his train of thought, and more importantly, he got us thinking about where the industry is today and the 6 points he feels will make us less grumpy about where landscape photography is going.

Being the fans of discussion that we are, we took his 6 points and dissected them. We wrap up the show with a most interesting comment from a viewer of Scott Kelby’s show, The Grid, episode 129.

Bits ‘n Bites

We’d love to know your thoughts on the 6 points from the article. Do you agree with them? What else could you add to the list for not only landscape photography, but any genre, really? If you have a chance to listen to The Grid, we’d also love to know what you think of viewer, JWPhoto’s comments. I personally think he nailed it!

Tweet Tweet

Of course we’re on Twitter, made our way back to Google Plus, and of course, you can find us at Facebook. Don’t forget to subscribe to iTunes if you haven’t already. You can also check out the show with the Stitcher app!

Make sure to check out Alex’s work … he has some stunning images. Thanks for the inspiration for today’s show, Alex! We appreciate you keeping the wheels turning!

Extra Extra

Even though we didn’t mention this on the show, for the folks in Edmonton: if you’re interested in the Finding Vivian Maier documentary, check out our tweet which has the scoop for a screening in the next couple of weeks!

Thanks as always for tuning in, folks.

Cheers, y’all!
